Program Overview

The MPS Directing program at SVA NYC is a one-year masters program in film directing. This film program is designed to provide a holistic approach to director’s craft. Students will develop the intellectual and practical tools for directing film. Curriculum will focus on the art of visual storytelling; story development from script to screen, directing actors, and understanding and utilizing cinematic tools to tell a compelling visual narrative. With the guidance of our award-winning faculty, students will cultivate original ideas for successful, inventive films. The course of study also addresses the historical and critical context of film as an art form, its political and socio-cultural dimensions, and comparative study of theories for understanding film and video.

Developed for the working professional, classes are held Monday through Thursday, 6:00 – 9:00pm with Fridays reserved for studio time, guest lectures, critiques, demonstrations and/or field trips. Additional class time may be scheduled as needed to allow for guest presentations or workshops.

In addition to classes, MPS Directing students will spend the Fall semester developing a short 8 to 15 minute screenplay to be produced, filmed, and edited in the Spring semester. The program provides a casting agent to assist students with casting their films. For production, our students have access to the highest quality cameras, lenses, camera support gear, audio equipment, lights and grip supplies. Our current holdings include Canon 60Ds, 5Ds, 7Ds and two Canon C300s as well as the Red Scarlet. We have a full range of Zeiss Prime Lens sets as well as individual zoom lenses. For finishing, we provide professional color grading and sound mixing from several of New York’s leading color and sound houses. The MPS Directing program strives to provide our students with an education that will prepare them to move directly into the professional world. For that reason, we provide our students with the tools to produce professional grade films that will help propel them into the film industry and onto their next film.

Degree candidates must successfully complete 30 credits, including all required courses and maintain a 3.0 grade point average. As part of the MPS Directing program, each student is required to complete and market his or her thesis film. These films will be screened in a juried film festival at the SVA Theatre. The thesis films must be reviewed and approved by the thesis committee and the department chair in order for the student to be eligible for degree conferral.

This studio-based film program is chaired by Bob Giraldi, the director who played a major role in the music video revolution and who continues to be a prolific creative force. As one of America’s legendary commercial and music video directors, Bob uses his considerable expertise and experience to introduce each of our students to the film industry. See Bob Giraldi's commercials and music videos featuring icons including Michael Jackson, Paul McCartney, Pat Benatar, Lionel Richie, Will Smith, and dozens more.
