The MPS Directing program at SVA NYC is an intensive, one-year masters program in film directing, designed to provide students with a comprehensive, hands-on education in visual storytelling. 

All graduate applicants for the Fall 2018 semester are required to complete the online application form and submit the nonrefundable $80 application fee using credit card.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

BACHELOR DEGREE

Applicants must have a bachelor's degree or its equivalent from an accredited college or university

OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS

Official transcripts are required from each college or university attended.

  • In order to be considered official, transcripts must be submitted in an unopened envelope that is stamped and sealed by the college registrar of the issuing institution.
  • Transcripts should be mailed or delivered by the applicant with all other application materials.
  • The School of Visual Arts now accepts secure electronic transcripts from Parchment, National Student Clearinghouse and Scrip-Safe. Check with the registrar's office at your institution to see if your school is a member. (IMPORTANT NOTE: Please be sure that all electronic transcript submissions are directed to 'Graduate Admissions' at [email protected])
  • Transcripts from foreign institutions must be officially translated into English and U.S. grading equivalencies. 

RECOMMENDATION LETTERS

Applicants are required to submit three letters of recommendation from instructors or practicing professionals.

Online submission is available through the online application. Applicants will be required to provide the email address and full contact information of their references.

Letters can also be mailed or delivered with all other supplementary application materials.

Recommenders should indicate the applicant’s full name and department of interest in the beginning of the letter as well as on the outside of the envelope. Each envelope must be sealed and signed by the recommender in order to be considered official.

Note: The School of Visual Arts does not provide letter of recommendation forms.

STATEMENTS OF PURPOSE

A statement on why you would you like to pursue a career in filmmaking and why you chose the MPS Directing program. Statement should not exceed 500 words.

PORTFOLIO

The submission to the Graduate Admissions SlideRoom account includes 5 parts for a maximum of 20 files:

SlideRoom will allow you to note title, date, medium, dimensions or running time and optional notes for each file. Acceptable file formats are listed within the software. All digital portfolio images and assignment files must be between 1500 and 2500 pixels in width or height at 72 dpi.

 

PARTS 1, 2, 3: 

Upload a copy of your Statement of Purpose, Resume and Writing Sample/Written Statement from your online application. Submit each item as an individual PDF.

 

PART 4: Portfolio

The Portfolio will consist of video, stills, or mixed-media. Each submission should be accompanied by a description that includes your role in the production of the submission and an explanation of the work. Foreign language videos should be subtitled.

 

PART 5: One-Minute Video Self Portrait

Introduce yourself to us in the most unusual and creative way possible. Tell us something about yourself that demonstrates your visual style and utilizes a narrative structure.

PROOF OF ENGLISH PROFICIENCY

Proof of English Proficiency is required for international applicants whose primary/native language is not English.

WRITING SAMPLE

Writing Sample may consist of a short story, treatment, or screenplay. Work should follow a narrative structure and express the concepts of a central theme. Writing sample should not exceed 3 pages.

RESUME

Applicants must submit a resume which should include professional experience as well as related activities, such as research, awards and exhibitions.

The Portfolio will consist of video, stills, or mixed-media. Each submission should be accompanied by a description that includes your role in the production of the submission and an explanation of the work. You may submit up to 10 minutes of video and/or up to 20 still images.

IMAGE FILE FORMAT

  • 20 still images in .jpg format, not to exceed 5mb each in file size.
  • All digital portfolio images and assignment files must be between 1500 and 2500 pixels in width or height at 72 dpi.
  • SlideRoom will allow you to note title, date, medium, dimensions or running time and optional notes for each file.

VIDEO FILE FORMAT

  • Videos uploaded as either .mov or mpeg4 files.
  • Video files are limited to 60mb each in size, and total no more than 10 minutes (no matter how many videos are submitted).
  • SlideRoom will allow you to note title, date, medium, dimensions or running time and optional notes for each file.
  • SlideRoom also allows you to enter links from Vimeo, YouTube, or SoundCloud.
